International protocol calls for all national flags to be flown at the same height, with the same size flag during peace time, and the United Nations flag is given the place of honor at the U.N. headquarters. Though these holidays all differ, and have separate traditions and elements specific to each holiday, they all hold our American traditions and beliefs dear.
It also serves to illustrate the immense distance between the actual form taken by American particularism and the blood-and-soil nationalisms to which it is so often inaccurately and ungenerously compared. They enacted Medicare, Social Security, and civil rights over furious conservative opposition by appealing to nationalism as well as a spirit of compassion, benevolence and justice.
As for nationalism, America's strong national identity has always manifested itself in the form of patriotism. Another GAR commander declared, "We had a new Union, no Northerners, no Southerners, but Americans all" ('Leary, p. 146). In most of the functions of national importance like Independence Day, Memorial Day et al, the bunting flags are used to mark the celebration.
In the nineteenth century, patriotism was increasingly interpreted in a different, nationalist manner, and patriotism and nationalism are nowadays often equated. 4. It's improper to place any other flag of pennant above or on the right of the U.S. flag, if flown at the same level as the American flag.
Believing in the promise of America enough to give their lives for it, American soldiers patrol dangerous areas of Iraq and Afghanistan every day. Different people have different opinions about whether patriotism is morally good. Patriotism such understood is also distinct from "constitutional patriotism" by which Jürgen Habermas means loyalty towards a constitution, a set of rights, instead of loyalty towards one's own nation 1999, pp. 105-127; 2001, pp. 5-26).
This is a surprising response to a film that shows the ugly side of poverty in Los Angeles, urban sprawl, deserted villages, people out of touch with their environment and traumatized by a history of imperialistic wars. Besides submitting patriotism to the kind of criticisms indicated above, the "desacralization" of political fetishes, such as the flag, can also proceed through trivialization, ridicule, disparagement and replacement.
